Welcome.
I’m Jane Schulak — author, interior designer, creative director, and founder of Culture Lab Detroit.
My work is a reflection of my commitment to art, artisans and the decorative arts.
Interior Design
My interior design education began in the house I grew up in, but was greatly fortified by the mentorship of some of the design and decorative art world’s legendary practitioners. David Hicks, Barbara Wirth, Christian Badin and Hubert de Givenchy all influence my practice, and hints of their hands show up in my interiors, all of which feature strong roots in the historical decorative arts. I am happiest when my work involves striking up a conversation between 18th century decorative arts and 21st century artists and artisans.
Creative Direction
Nothing thrills me more than an empty space, whether it’s a soaring room in a museum, a floor in a department store, or a former historic theater-turned-parking lot. Transformation based on a vision is second nature to me, executing it to the smallest detail is my passion.
Culture Lab Detroit
I founded the non-profit art and social practice platform in 2012 and for 14 years forged conversations and collaborations between the city of Detroit and the international art and design community.
My Book:
At the Artisan’s Table
At The Artisan’s Table is where my education in the decorative arts meets my fascination with handmade things.
Together with David Stark, I forced a dialog between the past and present in the place I am most comfortable: at the table.
Published by Vendome, available now.
